A fast website isn't a luxury. It's a competitive advantage. Google uses speed as a ranking factor. Users abandon sites that take more than 3 seconds to load. Conversion rates drop with every additional second of load time. Performance is business.
The Metrics That Matter
Google's Core Web Vitals are the standard:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): How quickly the main content appears. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): How quickly the page responds to user interaction. Target: under 200 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): How much the layout shifts as it loads. Target: under 0.1.
Where Speed Goes Wrong
Images. Unoptimized images are the #1 cause of slow sites. Compress every image. Serve modern formats (WebP, AVIF). Use responsive image sizes.
JavaScript. Every kilobyte of JavaScript must be downloaded, parsed, and executed. Most sites ship far more than they need. Remove unused libraries and split your code.
Third-party scripts. Analytics, chat widgets, tracking pixels — each one adds weight. Audit them regularly.
Server response time. If your server takes 800 milliseconds to respond, nothing else matters. Use caching, a CDN, and efficient backend code.
Render-blocking resources. CSS and JavaScript that block the initial render make your site feel slow. Inline critical CSS and defer non-critical scripts.
The Performance Budget
Set a performance budget: a limit on the total weight of your page. A common starting point is 170KB of JavaScript, 50KB of CSS, and total page weight under 1MB. Every feature you add must fit within the budget.
The Practical Checklist
- Compress and serve images in modern formats
- Set a JavaScript budget and stick to it
- Audit and minimize third-party scripts
- Use a CDN for all static assets
- Implement lazy loading for below-the-fold content
- Minify and compress all text assets
- Set proper cache headers
- Test on real devices and real network conditions
Performance isn't a one-time optimization. It's a discipline. The teams that build fast sites are the teams that treat performance as a feature, not an afterthought.
